If you’re throwing a birthday party, chances are the person enjoys a celebration. Of course, who doesn’t? When a party is thrown, it’s a massive anticlimax when it’s anything less than extravagant. We all enjoy an enormous hurrah filled with activity, socializing and celebration of our lives. Yet, some of us sit around saying, “I don’t have the imagination for that!” Yes, you do, and if you don’t, then follow these tips.
First Chance
As long as this isn’t a surprise birthday party, consult the birthday person. Ask what it is they like best. Do they enjoy more party than activity or more activity than party? What are their favorite food, color and time of day?
Scheme a Theme
We all love themes. However, some of us are a little shy so you wouldn’t want to choose a theme that will put someone in the spotlight, such as King of the Day or Princess Power. For shy individuals, you’ll want to choose something that encompasses the entire guest list, rather than singles them out. However, for the outgoing individual, you’ll want to choose something that puts them in the spotlight.
Themes such as cartoon, western, Disney and toy characters are good for either the shy or the outgoing individual. They’ll be able to dress up as their favorite character along side the rest of their guests. You may also choose something like a fair or carnival theme filled with prizes and games.
Choosing the theme is often the hardest part of planning. It takes a lot of brainstorming to come up with an idea that will suit the guest of honor while still carrying a pleasing quality. Never fear, though. Whatever theme is chosen, banners, balloons, party favors, prizes, games and food are always involved and these usually make the best of the party.
Game On
Planning games for a children’s party is often easy. Choosing traditional games, such as pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey or a piñata are always a hit. However, we sometimes get a little stumped when it comes to games for adults. Don’t be worried. Adults are just giant kids. Pick games like memory, musical chairs, races or darts and you’ll find that despite the mature exterior, even the hardest adult will giggle as someone gets shoved off a chair.
Favors are universal. Bags filled with tiny, useless things are the best part of every individual’s party time. Fill them with kazoos, noise makers, tiaras, wands, makeup, water guns or generally anything that suits your theme. The point is to make it fun and enjoyable. There’s no need to ambush people with extravagant gift bags when they’re just trying to have a good time.
Did You Eat?
If your party is going to last only a couple hours, don’t fill the guests with steak. Give them a buffet of finger foods and fruit. On the other hand, if your party will last for hours or most of the day, take time to serve them dinner or lunch. Leave a snack area out for kids or for mingling adults.
There’s a trick to birthday party food. People are there to mingle and have a good time. If you put out overstated foods, they’ll be ignored simply for the fact most of your guests won’t really know what to do with it. Throw out some chips and refreshments and you’ve got yourself a hit. It doesn’t have to be chips, per say, just something light and inviting. Something social will help bring the guests to the table.
